Polypropylene FDY yarn: Production process, product characteristics and application scenarios 


In the product series of polypropylene filament yarns, polypropylene FDY yarn (Fully Drawn Yarn, fully stretched yarn) is a finished fiber produced through the continuous integration of spinning and stretching processes. Unlike the post-tensioning process of POY (pre-twisted yarn) or the stretching process after UDY (unstretched yarn), FDY has completed all the stretching during the spinning process. After winding and forming, it can be directly used for weaving or twisting. This process path endows Polypropylene FDY yarn with specific physical property parameters and application positioning. 


Process logic and equipment configuration 


The preparation of polypropylene FDY yarn adopts a one-step process of spinning and stretching. The polypropylene chips are melted by a screw extruder and then enter the spinning box. The molten material is extruded through the spinneret as a thin stream, cooled and solidified by side blowing air, and then passes through two or more sets of stretching rollers for thermal stretching. The stretching ratio is generally between 3.0 and 5.5 times. During the stretching process, the thermal setting is completed simultaneously, stabilizing the internal lattice structure of the fiber. Finally, it is wound and formed by the winding head, and the winding speed is usually within the range of 2500-3500 m/min. 


Compared with the two-step process, the FDY route reduces the storage of intermediate products and the secondary processing steps, shortening the production cycle by approximately 40% and eliminating the risk of quality deterioration of POY during storage and filament spinning. However, due to the need for a high degree of matching between spinning and stretching speeds, the FDY equipment has more stringent requirements for the precision of temperature control and tension adjustment. 


Key performance parameters 


The basic physical indicators of polypropylene FDY yarn are as follows: 


Linear density range: For regular products, it is between 50 dtex and 600 dtex. Customized specifications of thicker or thinner can also be provided according to requirements. The deviation rate of fineness is generally controlled within ≤ 2.0%. 


Breaking strength: Usually within the range of 3.5 - 5.5 cN/dtex. This value lies between that of ordinary polypropylene filament (approximately 2.5 - 3.5 cN/dtex) and polypropylene high-strength filament (≥ 6.0 cN/dtex), balancing the toughness required for weaving processing and the strength of the finished product. 


Tensile elongation rate: Controlled within the range of 35% - 55%. This relatively high elongation rate endows the fibers with better flexibility and impact resistance, making them less prone to breakage during weaving, dyeing and post-treatment processes. 


Boiling water shrinkage rate: After heat setting, the boiling water shrinkage rate of FDY yarn is usually between 3% and 8%, which is lower than that of untreated yarn. This ensures the dimensional stability of the finished fabric during the wet heat treatment process. 


Color uniformity: The FDY yarn has a uniform structure and the color absorption rate during dyeing varies little. The gray card rating can reach level 4 or above, making it suitable for fabric products that have certain requirements for color consistency. 


Main application fields 


The application of Polypropylene FDY yarn is mainly in textiles, while also covering some industrial uses. 


Sports and Outdoor Clothing Fabrics: The FDY silk fine denier specifications (50dtex - 150dtex) have excellent drape and skin-friendly feel, and their natural hydrophobic property enables them to have excellent moisture-wicking and sweat-removing capabilities. Knitted or woven fabrics made from polypropylene FDY are widely used in sports T-shirts, yoga wear, and outdoor underwear layers. The fabric weight is usually about 15% lighter than the same specification polyester. 


Home and decoration fabrics: Coarse denier FDY yarn (200dtex - 600dtex) is used for weaving curtains, sofa covers and bedding sets. Due to the mature process of coloring the polypropylene raw material, the FDY colored yarn has good color saturation, with a color difference control of ΔE ≤ 1.0. Moreover, it does not require high-temperature and high-pressure dyeing, which reduces the dyeing cost and wastewater discharge. 


Industrial sewing thread: Polypropylene FDY yarn has an appropriate surface friction coefficient. After twisting, it can be made into high-strength sewing thread, especially suitable for sewing of synthetic fiber fabrics. It can avoid wrinkling of the stitches caused by dimensional differences. 


Filtering and separation materials: Some FDY filaments of certain specifications are used for weaving single filament filter cloths. Their smooth surface is conducive to the removal of the filter cake, and they have better acid and alkali resistance than nylon, making them suitable for chemical filtration processes.

Selection Guidelines 


Polypropylene FDY yarn does not require pre-treatment before weaving. However, it is recommended to place it in a constant temperature and humidity environment for 24 to 48 hours before use to reduce tension fluctuations caused by changes in temperature and humidity. 


During the sizing or bonding process, the temperature of the sizing solution should not exceed 100℃ to prevent the fibers from undergoing thermal contraction. 


When blending with polyester FDY, it is necessary to pay attention to the difference in heat setting temperatures between the two materials (polypropylene ≤ 130℃, polyester ≥ 170℃). The post-finishing process should preferably adopt a low-temperature setting process. 


Overall, polypropylene FDY yarn is a mature finished chemical fiber raw material with a well-defined value. Its value lies in the balanced strength-extension ratio, excellent dyeing uniformity, and the convenience of being a one-step process without the need for secondary processing. For weaving enterprises that aim to balance production efficiency and product consistency, polypropylene FDY yarn offers a basic raw material option that combines cost-effectiveness with reliable performance.
