What are the differences between polypropylene POY yarn and polyester POY yarn?
What are the differences between polypropylene POY yarn and polyester POY yarn?
Raw material base
Although both polypropylene POY yarn and polyester POY yarn belong to pre-oriented yarns and have similar production processes, their base resins are completely different, resulting in fundamental performance differences. polypropylene POY yarn is made from polypropylene and has a relatively low overall density, featuring good water-repellent properties and outstanding resistance to acid and alkali corrosion. It performs better in various corrosive environments. Polyester POY yarn is made from polyester chips and has a more stable molecular structure, superior heat resistance, anti-aging ability, and stronger anti-settling performance. It has a smaller deformation amplitude under long-term stress.
The processing systems suitable for these two raw materials are different. Polypropylene POY has specific requirements for spinning oil and color mother mix, and the compatibility selection range is narrower; polyester POY has mature accessory agent categories, rich coloring and modification schemes, and can achieve more functional adjustments.
Application selection
Polyester POY is the more widely used category in the market. It can be processed into low-tensile yarns for post-processing, mainly used in home textile fabrics, clothing fabrics, decorative fabrics, etc. The finished product has balanced hand feel and color fastness, better long-term outdoor durability, and is suitable for weaving scenarios requiring dimensional stability and weather resistance.
Polypropylene POY yarn is more oriented towards industrial applications. It is often processed into high-strength multifilament yarns, webbing, ropes, non-woven fabric base fabrics, etc., suitable for products in water environments and chemical environments. It has weak moisture absorption capacity, fast drying speed of the finished product, but has relatively weak high-temperature performance, and is not suitable for continuous high-temperature conditions; the coloring is relatively more difficult, and the coloring scheme needs to be specially adapted.
When selecting for purchase, prioritize the usage environment: for water environments, acid-base conditions, and those seeking lightweight options, choose polypropylene POY; for long-term exposure to sunlight, high-temperature environments, clothing and home textiles, products requiring stable dimensions and rich colors, prioritize polyester POY. At the same time, it is also necessary to consider the post-processing equipment conditions. The drawling and weaving process parameters of the two types of yarns cannot be used interchangeably, and when changing the raw materials, the process needs to be adjusted synchronously to avoid problems such as broken yarns, color differences, and poor formation.
In summary, neither has absolute superiority or inferiority. The core is to match the working condition requirements, and reasonably select based on the post-processing capabilities.
